Definition:
Apprentice Meter Technician
Participate in an apprentice training program to learn and perform technical repair and
installation of residential and commercial electric meters within a repair shop and in the field.

Training level of the Electric Meter Technician position. Requires participation in the Apprentice
Electric Meter Technician Program, which typically requires at least four years of formal training

and on-the-job experience for completion. Incumbent must advance and successfully test at the
program standards.

Journey Meter Technician
Perform technical repair and installation of residential and commercial electric meters within a
repair shop and in the field.

Journey-level Electrical Meter Technician requiring advancement from the Apprentice Electric
Meter Technician program typically requiring at least four years of formal education and training
or significant external experience. Incumbent is expected to work independently and perform all
functions at a competent level.


Principal Duties:

Apprentice Meter Technician

* Provide assistance to journey-level electric meter technicians in the installation,
maintenance, repair and removal of City electric metering and equipment for residential,
commercial, industrial, and survey applications. Learn to program meters using
manufacturer's software and specifications.
* Learn and perform inspection, testing, and calibration of all types of electric meters,
meter housings, and voltage and current transformers to specific applications. Repair
and modify the same.
* Perform disconnects and connects of electric meters. Assist Journey Meter Technicians
in the resolution of billing disputes.
* Investigate and troubleshoot customer complaints and issues.
* Read meters and download survey data for MV-90 for commercial, industrial, and other
accounts.
* Maintain an inventory of shop parts, supplies, and equipment and inform supervisor of
items and equipment to purchase.
* Perform temporary construction and permanent connections of electrical power to
buildings.

Journey Meter Technician
* Install, maintain, repair, and remove City electric metering and equipment for residential,
commercial, industrial, and survey applications. Program meters using manufacturer's
software and specifications. Create meter programs and program meters using
manufacture's software and specifications.

* Inspect, test, and calibrate all types of electric meters, meter housings, and voltage and
current transformers to specific applications. Repair and modify the same. Install
firmware updates for all meter testing and calibrating equipment. Prepare
metering equipment for RMA and update inventory/tracking logs for equipment
requiring repairs and upon return.

* Perform disconnects and connects of electric meters. Assist in the resolution of billing
disputes.

* Investigate and troubleshoot customer complaints and issues.

* Read meters and download survey data for MV-90 for commercial, industrial, and other
high usage commercial accounts.

* Maintain an inventory of shop parts, supplies, and equipment and inform supervisor of
items and equipment to purchase. Create and complete pick tickets for items that can be
ordered from the warehouse.

* Perform temporary construction and permanent connections of electrical power to
buildings.

* Provide troubleshooting assistance on the AMI system including Radio
Frequency, Advanced Meters, firmware updates and AMI performance.


Working Environment:
Apprentice Meter Technician/ Journey Meter Technician
Work is performed outside in varied and extreme weather conditions in the City of Longmont's
electric and water service territories. Work requires walking and standing at a minimum of six
hours per day, walking on slippery or uneven surfaces, and walking at a pace that enables
completion of assigned routes within work shift. Irregular or protracted work hours are
occasionally required. Work will involve entering customer's private property, which may include
encounters with threatening animals. Requires entering confined spaces to read meters located
in manholes. There will be frequent exposure to sun and occasional exposure to noise, dust, and
moving vehicles. Requires correctable near and far vision and ability to distinguish colors. The
candidate for this position must be able to meet the physical requirements necessary to do the
job.


Qualifications:
Apprentice Meter Technician

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to courses in algebra and
trigonometry and at least six months of work experience with mechanical or electrical

equipment are required for acceptance into the City of Longmont Electric Meter Technician
apprenticeship training program. Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Colorado
driver's license, possession of First Aid and CPR certifications.

Journey Meter Technician
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the completion of the City of
Longmont's Electric Meter Technician Apprentice Program (MJTS) or at least four years'
experience as an Electric Meter Technician in an external organization. Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid Colorado driver's license, possession of First Aid and CPR certifications.

Selection
