Definition:
Perform entry-level clerical work related to checking in and shelving library books and materials,
and provide routine assistance to library patrons in the Circulation Department.

Principal Duties:
Attend meetings and trainings as required. Checks in returned items using computer or
automated materials handler. Pushes or pulls gray bins from circulation area and book drop
room, picks up items, check them in with optical scanner/RFID technology, and sorts onto
shelves and carts according to collection codes. Empty book returns. Establish and maintain
effective working relationship with other city employees, supervisors, and library patrons.
Identify overdue materials; process overdue notices; collect, record, and process fines according
to Library policies. Issue and renew library cards. Maintain statistical records as required.
Maintains the appearance of the collection by straightening materials on the shelves, picking up
and re-shelving materials left by patrons, and performs miscellaneous duties on the opening


and closing procedures list in order to prepare the library for patron use each day. Read and
respond to emails from staff and patrons. "Reads" shelves for accuracy by checking to be certain
that materials are on the shelf in call number order and re-shelving or shifting materials as
necessary in order to maintain the collection in the correct order. Shelve library materials in
correct order by alphabetical, numerical or the Dewey Decimal System. Work at the Information
Desk and the Help Desk answering phones, directing patrons, making courtesy calls regarding
books on hold, registering new patrons, updating patron information, and renewing materials.

Working Environment:
Work is in a standard library environment, which includes exposure to dust. Work requires
standing, walking, bending and stooping, use of hands to make repetitive grasping motions,
light to moderate loads of up to 50 pounds, pushing and pulling of book carts, and sufficient
vision to clearly read book labels. May require climbing at least two steps on a ladder or step
stool and reaching above shoulder level. Work requires ability to read, write, and use
mathematical reasoning at a level sufficient to perform alphabetical and numeric sorting of
books. Work requires ability to hear and communicate orally with library patrons. Work requires
working days, evenings and weekends on a regular basis. Work frequently involves
confidentiality, reasoning, problem solving, and attention to detail.

Qualifications:
Any combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties.
Selection
